Playing with Theory in Theatre Practice

Through a collection of original essays and case studies, this innovative book explores theory as an accessible, although complex, tool for theatre practitioners and students. These chapters invite readers to (re)imagine theory as a site of possibility or framework that can shape theatre making, emerge from practice, and foster new ways of seeing, creating, and reflecting. Focusing on the productive tensions and issues that surround creative practice and intellectual processes, the contributing authors present central concepts and questions that frame the role of theory in the theatre. Ultimately, this diverse and exciting collection offers inspiring ideas, raises new questions, and introduces ways to build theoretically-minded, dynamic production work

The Changing Face of American Theatre

Revision with unchanged content. Despite the fact that Joseph Papp’s colorblind and uni-racial casting has had an impact as a racial project in the United States, there are significant elements to his casting which have yet to be explored. The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent and nature of colorblind and uni-racial casting at the NYSF and explore how the two different methods of non-traditional casting were used at various times in the organization’s history. The analysis should help to answer the following questions- What motivated Papp to try non-traditional casting? How were Papp’s casting decisions linked to the social and political environment; what is the relationship between the practices and historical events? Did Papp’s casting choices work to reinforce or dispel racial categories prevalent in theatre and society? What were the audiences’ reactions to the two forms of casting? What was the impact of his work on his actors and the company he founded in the long term? The book is addressed to researchers in theatre, race relations, and history. The book is also directed to theatre educators, students, and professionals

New Museums theatre and museums New Museums theatre and museums

New Museums

The intention of this book consists in providing an original description of how museums have developed from 1993 to 2008 handling the contemporary situation under different points of view and focusing in particular on the European branch of the industry. The first part of the analysis aims at providing a theoretical framework going through the history of museums since their birth and discussing how the role of these institutions have changed over the years; particular consideration is given at the architectural factor to understand the influence it had on the concept of “museum” and vice versa. After this theoretical setting, the paper deals with empirical work: it brings the reader right into the core of the quantitative analysis, anticipated by an explanation of the methodologies used to gather and elaborate data of more than 700 new museums and renewals. Many results will allow the author to “take a picture” of the contemporary museum industry contributing, at least, to the curiosity that everyone may have towards this sector or, better, to make up for a lack in the current literature
